Resume and Interview Tips for Accountants and Bookkeepers

Have you completed your accounting and bookkeeping course? Want to know what’s the next thing to do after acquiring your financial services qualification?

It’s a no-brainer really — it’s now time to put your accounting and bookkeeping skills to good use.

Whether you’re keen on applying for accounting roles or bookkeeping roles, you’re going to have to send a well-crafted resume, and pass a job interview.

This means you must be able to leave a good impression using those requirements.

Having the necessary Accounting and Bookkeeping qualification won’t be all there is when it comes to getting hired —you still need to convince your employers that you are the right candidate for the job.

Best way to do that? Craft a well-written resume and ace your interview.

Read on to learn a few tips and tricks to do so!

I. Writing an Exceptional Resume

There are a few things you should remember if you want your resume to say “hire me” right off the bat:

1. Use a resume template – using a template when creating your resume will save you heaps of time in figuring out where to specifically place information about yourself.

It’s also easy to customize and use a personal style that can best highlight your strengths, skills, and knowledge.

2. Make use of a basic font – While it is important to impress your employer, you don’t have to go overboard. You still have to maintain a professional vibe, and your resume’s font can greatly contribute to it.

There’s no need to use fonts such as Algerian or anything similar. Just stick to fonts that are easy on the eyes such as Calibri, Times New Roman, or Arial. Help your employers to easily read and go through your resume.

 3. List your most important and relevant accomplishments/qualifications first – Your main goal in writing a resume is to highlight just how skilled you are as an Accountant or Bookkeeper.

So, make sure to list all the relevant accomplishments you have so far. Don’t forget to include the accounting and bookkeeping qualifications you have under your belt as well. Highlight just how skilled and knowledgeable you are!

 4. Don’t forget to include your contact info – Don’t get too hung up on listing all your accomplishments — remember to include your contact info as well!

You want your employers to get a hold of you once they decide you are the one. Include your full name (never your nickname), complete address, phone number, and email address. If you have a LinkedIn profile or a professional website, there’s no harm in including that too.

II. Job Interview Tips

Here are some tips and tricks to have a successful job interview:

1. Be on time – Being punctual will always give you a great first impression. It means you’re taking the role seriously and are keen to be part of their company.

Showing up on time is of course expected, but never take it for granted. It’s one way of giving a good impression even if the actual interview hasn’t begun.

2. Do research on the company – It wouldn’t hurt to get to know a little more about your employer even before your interview. You can get asked questions like “What do you think of our company?”. If you did do your homework on them, you don’t have to reply with a short and sloppy “I think you guys are great.”

If you know the basics of who they are and what they do, then you can elaborate a little more. Don’t worry about being a show-off, as this just means you’re serious about them and the position you’re applying for.

3. Get a friend and practice answering common questions – Think of all the common questions that come up on interviews and rehearse answering them with a friend. This can help you with your nerves during the actual job interview itself.

4. Dress sharp – Dress smart, clean, and confident. The way you conduct yourself plays an important role in the selection process, apart from your skills and qualifications of course. You can seal the deal with the way you dress.

5. Bring copies of your resume, a notebook, and a pen – Sure, you might have already sent a soft copy prior to the interview. But bring a copy anyway. You just never know.

Your employer may or may not ask for a copy. In any case, bring one anyway. It’s also always good to have a pen and a small notebook with you. You may not end up using it, but then again, it’s always best to be prepared for anything.
